  1. Reader Brian McLeod pointed out that a few reciprocating units are designed for tougher duty and can handle high duty cycle and go to similar pressures as rotaries.

    This is true, but they are significantly more expensive than piston compressors commonly found in small shops. Also, they operate hotter and have more oil in the air and its harder to dry them to the same dew point as a rotary.

    Nonetheless, they are fine choices for many small shops with low air quality requirements.
